During an Abortion
Because of gaps in national and state abortion reporting, and the continued opposition of abortion advocacy groups to more accurate and detailed reporting, relatively little is known about how often survival now occurs after abortion.
However, of the states that include born-alive statistics in their abortion reporting, we know that in just three states between 2015 – 2018, 47 children were born alive during an abortion attempt: Arizona (10),1 Florida (21),2 and Minnesota (16).3
Melissa is the survivor of a failed saline infusion abortion in 1977. Despite the initial concerns regarding Melissa’s future after surviving the attempt to end her life at approximately seven months gestation, she has not only survived but thrived. Gianna Jessen was intended to die before she was born, just another one of the 1.2 million abortions each year in the United States. Instead of death, though, Gianna was bathed in a burning saline solution, but she overcame to enter the world. Two months premature and weighing just two and a half pounds, she spent her first couple of months in a hospital.
A woman in South Korea was two months pregnant with Josiah Presley, when she decided to have an abortion. My birth mother was 13 years old at the time she became pregnant with me. Her mother took her straight to an abortion clinic where she had a surgical abortion. After thinking she had “fixed the problem,” a few weeks later she realized her belly was still growing. Her mother took her back to the abortion clinic where she learned that she had been pregnant with twins…One was aborted; One survived.
Jill Stanek was a registered nurse in the Labor & Delivery Department at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois. She discovered not only were abortions being committed there, but babies were being aborted alive to die without medical care:
“One night, a nursing co-worker was taking a baby with Down syndrome who had been aborted alive to our Soiled Utility Room because his parents did not want to hold him. I could not bear the thought of this suffering child dying alone, so I cradled and rocked him for the 45 minutes that he lived. He was between 21 and 22 weeks old, weight about 1/2 pound, and was about 10 inches long. He was too weak to move…”
Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell and his unlicensed, untrained staff regularly committed illegal late-term abortions. When babies were born alive during an abortion–as they often were–Gosnell killed them by “snipping” their spinal cords. This went on for 17 years without a single state health department inspection.

77 percent of voters support legislation to ensure that a baby who survives a failed abortion be given the same medical treatment as any other baby born prematurely at the same age (55 percent strongly support). Only 9 percent of voters oppose the legislation (5 percent strongly oppose).
